Our Thoughts on Automatic File Organization

Do you ever feel like after half a year of using your computer, your desktop is covered with files, downloads folder is a mess, and you just can’t find that thing you’re looking for?
We experienced it too.
Before building FinalPlace, we spent a lot of time observing user file management habits. We discovered an interesting phenomenon: almost everyone knows their desktop is messy, but few are willing to actively organize it.
It’s not laziness, it’s meaningless. Organized today, messy tomorrow.
So we thought: what if we let the computer automatically organize?
Starting from a Simple Observation
Section titled “Starting from a Simple Observation”Let’s break down “messy files” into components.
Messy files essentially come down to two things:
- Files don’t know where they should go
- Users don’t know where files are
The first problem is easy to solve - just tell the computer “files of this type should go here.” What’s difficult is the second problem, because user needs are diverse: some want to categorize by type, some by time, and others by project.
So the key isn’t finding a “correct” location for files, but letting users define what “correct” means.
Breaking Problems into Smallest Units
Section titled “Breaking Problems into Smallest Units”We started with a small exercise: Describe how you want files to be organized?
Try saying your rules. They don’t need to be precise, approximate is fine.
For example, someone might say:
“Downloaded PDFs, if not opened for over a week, move to the documents folder.”
Or:
“Screenshots, automatically move to the screenshot folder after one day.”
The Core Philosophy of FinalPlace
Section titled “The Core Philosophy of FinalPlace”1. Rules, not habits
Good file management isn’t about “developing good habits” - habits require willpower, and willpower is limited. Rules are different: once set, they automatically execute.
2. Local first
We believe file data should never leave your computer. All operations run locally, protecting privacy and ensuring speed.
3. Undoable
Any operation can be undone. This gives you confidence to try new rules without worrying about consequences.
4. Privacy
FinalPlace doesn’t collect filenames, file contents, or file locations. We don’t need that data, and we don’t want it.
Our belief: The best tool is one that works silently in the background. FinalPlace is that quiet guardian for your files.
